Funiculì, Funiculà

Funiculì, Funiculà

This is a famous Italian song from Naples.
It was composed in 1880.
It celebrates the first cable car on Mount Vesuvius.
Unfortunately the original cable car was destroyed by a Vesuvius eruption in 1944.

Cinemas and Museums

What do we look for when we visit a museum?

Seven things:

- images,

- sounds,

- a new perspective,

- a strong feeling,

- develop a self awareness,

- become curious and

- want to express myself.

· These are similar criteria for watching a documentary film.

Lunch at a vineyard

It was a summer afternoon, we went to lunch at a vineyard.

There, I felt the taste of food better than other places in town where you have to listen to noisy music and people's voices.

We were surrounded by nature's sounds such as cicadas, and breeze blowing through the trees.

And people's time there seemed to stop and they looked so relaxed. I wanted to transfer that ambience to this painting.

Turning the handlebars makes the wheel elliptical

The artist is talking to the cyclist.

...

Cyclist: Can I use the bicycle?

Artist: Wait a moment. I’m trying to see what happens when you turn the handlebars to the right.

Cyclist: The bicycle turns to the right?

Artist: I want to see what happens to the wheel. See? It turns elliptical. And the right handlebar goes up and the left handlebar comes up.

Cyclist: It doesn’t feel like that when you’re riding it.

________

Voiceover

Sometimes a mundane shopping excursion intrudes on the creation of great art. Attempts at humor by the would-be cyclist are lost in the pursuit of an elliptical bicycle wheel.

Audtioning Part Two: Kamishibai Remix

Atsuko borrows some techniques of kamishibai for an audition.

Oliver: Why is she moving back and forth?

Ned: Well, first she speaks one part and then she speaks the other.

Oliver: She’s telling a story?

Ned: Through dialogue, yes.

Oliver: And pictures too.

Ned: It almost looks like she has done a remix, putting together a ventriloquist act with kamishibai.

Oliver: Kamishibai?

Ned: A story told using pictures and a frame.

Oliver: Refreshing change from the gravity of Gore, but she could use a little coaching on voices and maybe a couple more pictures.

Auditioning

Oliver and Ned are discussing an actor’s audition.

Ned: Has he got it?

Oliver: What?

Ned: What it takes.

Oliver: Oh, he’s got what it takes. You see?

Ned: I see him standing.

Oliver: And delivering.

Ned: That’s it. Standing and delivering.

Oliver: He’s just right. He’s got character, he’s got poise, he’s got timing. He’s got it all.

It's in the eyes

I asked the artist who was sketching some faces for a book project whether she had completed a sketch of Steven Pinker. She said she didn't think she had. But I seemed to recall that there was a sketch of him in a folder somewhere so I asked her again. She took another look at a photograph of Steven Pinker, and then said, "Oh yes. I remember him now. It's in the eyes."

Diavlog

This vlog will not be daily like my other blogger blog at http://o2jottings.blogspot.com.

We'll aim at here at Diavlog for a weekly vlog production.

Scenarios will originate from o2jottings (a text and pictures site), but the video footage will be experimental.

Suffice to say the emphasis will be on talk. Contextualized conversations. Who speaks, what, when, where, and why.

Premiere on Sunday December 2, 2007.
